Caught on camera; the film crew from BBC East Midlands were on-site today to interview Yvonne about business rates and the effect it has on small businesses.
“When was the last time you checked your business rates bill? Are your details correct on the Valuation Office website? If you have any concern about paying too much, call your local council. Derby City Council were incredibly helpful, and we received 60% Small Business Rates Relief. We believe we should receive more discount so, we’ve employed the help of a local valuation agent to challenge the amount with the Valuation Office,” explained Yvonne.
“I believe that all small businesses should contribute; rates go towards essential local services such as schools but, there should be a balance. Many small businesses are paying a disproportionate amount. Reform of business rates could be in proportion to a company’s profits, business size or the actual rental payments – not just the building’s value. The time between property valuations should be more frequent – things change rapidly in business and I believe that once the valuations are complete, they are soon outdated” Yvonne added.
“A staggering, 10% of businesses in the East Midlands are behind on their business rate bills. If you’re struggling to pay your business rates, call your local authority before they contact you. Arrange a payment plan with them – I understand that running is hard work and the costs are challenging but, do not bury your head in the sand – take action!” Yvonne concludes.
Before the crew left, we had to get a photo of Mike & Andrew on the space hoppers!
