With the imminent arrival of GDPR coming into force on 25th May 2018, we’ve been busy bees reviewing all our policies and procedures. Like it, loathe it or may you’ve not even heard about it, GDPR will soon be here, and if you’re in business, we highly recommend you start to look into your obligations…NOW.
In our opinion, the best place to start is the organisation where GDPR was born; The ICO. Their website has a handy, online self-assessment and easy-to-understand guidance.
“As a business owner, GDPR is yet another responsibility that I’m forced to adhere to. But, in true Essential Print Services fashion, we’re turning this potential pain in the bum into an opportunity,” says Yvonne ‘The Geek’ Gorman.
“I’ve spent hours, reading articles, listening to webinars and podcasts from varying sources to get a broader understanding of what we need to do to comply. Luckily, we already have a lot of things in place. The exercise has highlighted a few areas where we need to be more careful with data, as well as new practices that will add value and efficiency,” added Yvonne.
The Information Commissioner herself, Elizabeth Denham (girl power), makes a good point; “don’t panic – we’re here to help“. We say; “don’t panic but, don’t do nothing and hope it goes away, start something today!” Start a task timetable and stick to it. By doing a little bit and often, the implementation of GDPR shouldn’t be tedious.
Yvonne’s top tip; “try to make the process fun. If you’re a geek like me, then enjoy learning all the new things about GDPR”. However, Yvonne does have a bee in her bonnet about one aspect of GDPR; Scaremongering. Over the past few months; I’ve been contacted by countless companies trying to scare me into using their services – erm…NO! I’m also still flabbergasted by the number of businesses who have not heard about GDPR – its worrying that the message still hasn’t reached them’.
If GDPR has got your goat or you’d like an informal chat about it, call 01332 418377 and ask for Yvonne – she doesn’t claim to be expert, but she will certainly share her experiences.
